How worried are your employees that AI will take their jobs?

According to the International Monetary Fund, ‘AI will affect almost 40% of jobs around the world, replacing some and complementing others.’ While concerns about AI taking jobs are natural, for most, it means that AI automation will take on, streamline, or enhance certain tasks, rather than replace roles entirely. The future of work is about humans collaborating with AI tools, not being replaced by them.

So, the real concern should be about those who are skilled in using AI taking the lead.

Over 75% of employees report using AI at work, often relying on free tools they've found while waiting for their employers to implement clear AI policies, processes, and tools. This ad-hoc approach means many are developing AI skills through trial and error, without formal guidance or training.

For organisations to stay ahead, a more strategic approach to upskilling teams in AI skills is essential. Integrating core AI competencies into existing L&D programmes is key, though the fast pace of change can make this challenging.

Read on to discover four practical steps you can take to integrate AI training into your L&D strategy and future-proof your workforce.

1. Embed AI skills in your competency frameworks

Integrating AI skills into your frameworks highlights their importance and shows you're taking a strategic approach to development. It keeps your upskilling initiatives aligned with the latest industry trends, helping your organisation stay ahead in a fast-evolving tech landscape.

When it comes to integrating AI skills into different roles, it's important to match the AI skills, level and depth needed to the requirements of each job.

For roles with a big or specialised AI component - like those developing advanced AI solutions or working on custom applications - you’ll need a deep set of skills. This might include expertise in specific AI platforms, advanced programming, and handling complex data analyses. Essentially, if AI is a core part of the role, aim for advanced competencies.

For jobs where AI plays a more general role, the focus should be on using AI tools effectively. This includes using generative AI for creating content, collaborative tools for productivity and managing AI tasks. Here, skills should cover data literacy for understanding AI insights, with proficiency levels ranging from basic to intermediate, unless the role demands something more specific.

Start by analysing each role carefully and talking to team leaders to draft the right competencies. Check these against industry standards and adjust as needed. Using AI tools to map these skills can also help highlight any gaps.

Lastly, make sure your skills framework includes practical, real-world examples. This way, it’s clear how the AI skills apply to everyday tasks in each role

2. Adopt an agile approach to skills gap analysis and content development

Staying agile in how you assess, and tackle skills gaps is crucial to stay ahead of evolving skill demands and keep your L&D efforts relevant. Instead of doing a skills gap analysis once a year, make it a regular practice. This way, you can respond quickly to new needs and keep your training content fresh. By using AI-driven analytics, you can also predict future skill requirements based on industry shifts and changes in your organisation.

When developing learning and assessments, think small and flexible. Target specific skills and create bite-sized, modular resources that can be easily updated. AI tools can streamline the design process, making everything more efficient.

Collaborate with different teams to ensure your skills gap analysis and content development line up with your company’s broader goals and needs. When cross-functional teams come together, you get diverse perspectives, which can lead to a more well-rounded L&D strategy.

3. Make learning practical and accessible

Creating personalised learning paths is key to making development efforts resonate with each individual. By tailoring learning experiences to each employee based on their role, current skill level  and career ambitions, you can ensure that learning is not only relevant but also engaging and impactful.

Offer a variety of on-demand learning resources, such as video tutorials, articles and case studies, so employees can learn at their own pace and revisit resources whenever they need to. Leverage AI-driven platforms to recommend resources based on each employee’s learning history and preferences.

Incorporate learning in the flow of work – think real-world projects and tasks – to help employees build and apply their skills practically. This hands-on interaction with AI tools helps them understand how these tools work in practice, which also accelerates skills development and boosts knowledge retention.

Lastly, creating learning communities or forums can also encourage team members to learn from each other and stay motivated. AI can support these communities by suggesting relevant groups based on learning goals and moderating discussions, creating a space where knowledge is shared, and collective learning is encouraged.

4. Support change management with effective communication

Effective communication is the backbone of successful change management. Clear and consistent communication about the benefits of upskilling can make a big difference, helping employees understand and embrace these changes. It’s not just about explaining how these new skills will enhance their roles, but also about creating an environment where continuous learning is encouraged and valued.

Start by involving employees in the planning and development stages of your programmes. This ensures their needs and concerns are addressed from the start. AI tools can be a real asset here; they can gather and analyse feedback through surveys and sentiment analysis, giving you insights into what employees are thinking and feeling.

Use a variety of channels - emails, team meetings and internal newsletters to maintain consistent messaging.

Set up a central hub where employees can find all the resources, FAQs and support materials they need. AI can help keep this hub organised and up-to-date, and chatbots can provide instant support when needed.

Lastly, make sure managers are equipped to support their teams through the transition. Provide them with training on how to integrate new skills into daily workflows and help their teams adapt effectively.

The future of work is AI-driven, and it's already here

AI is transforming the future of work, and it’s essential for L&D teams to help their workforce get ready for this shift. By staying agile, incorporating key AI skills, making learning practical and accessible, and communicating clearly, you’ll empower your team to not just adapt, but thrive in this new AI-driven world.
